Flexibility is a key asset for trading. Having the possibility of customising your conditions allows your automated trading strategy to fit better your needs. That also allows you to experiment with more strategy combinations to adjust them to all possible market conditions.

On a Trader plan, you can add up to five different conditions per block

 so that the strategy will fire the orders based on complex combinations. The more precise is the definition of the trigger, the more effective the trading strategy will be!

 Understanding Time Frames For Price Changes

There are endless trading strategies that traders can build. The style and the approach of each system depend mostly on 

The time frame determines the calculation of the indicator, and thus, has a key role in shaping the trading strategy. 

For example, regarding the choice of a price change in a condition, you can set a higher or lower price change, and you can calculate it on a longer or shorter time frame. 

This matrix summarizes how these elements influence the style of the strategy.

How we calculate the time frames for price

After selecting an indicator to add to your condition block, you need to choose the time frame in which to calculate it.

That means that the price reference to calculate the price increase is updated every 15 minutes. The bot uses candlestick data so that at any time, 

it compares the market price to the closing price of the first previous 15-minutes candle.

You can check the time frame on a chart to see how it works. The example below shows how it would work. 

The current price increase of BTCUSDT within 15 minutes is around +0.40%

When you select a time frame, the bot dynamically follows the market trend. If you prefer to use a fixed price reference, you can use "from current market price" instead.

In the realm of cryptocurrency trading, the use of 'closed candles' is pivotal for accurate analysis and decision-making. 

Trades are executed on Coinrule based on closed candles. 

Closed candles are candles that have completed their time period and have a finalized set of data. This is in contrast to an 'open candle' which is still forming and whose final values can change until the time period closes. Using closed candles for technical analysis provides a more stable and reliable foundation for evaluating market trends and making trading decisions. It ensures that all the information used has been settled, reflecting a full cycle of trading dynamics within the time frame selected.

For instance, in a 1-hour candlestick chart, each candle represents price movement over one hour. A closed candle on this chart means that the hour has ended and the next candle begins. If a trader is looking at a candle from 2 PM to 3 PM, once the clock strikes 3 PM, that candle is considered closed, and the analysis will only consider the data between 2 PM and 3 PM. Below is an example of how closed candles might appear on a chart:

Here, you can see several closed candles, each indicating the finalized state of market conditions over successive time frames. Traders would use this finalized information to predict future movements or confirm past trends.

Time Frames For Price Changes

The main goal of trading is to buy low and sell high. To be successful, any trading strategy needs to assess where the price currently stands and where it may head at. 

The ability to read a crypto chart makes the difference in the ultimate result of the strategy.

Charts inform the trader about the previous and current prices. This data can help to take more appropriate actions to take advantage of future price movements.

The main benefit of being able to read a crypto chart are:

A better understanding of how the strategy will work

The possibility of adjusting more efficiently the parameters of the system according to market conditions.

As a first step, you need to select the right time frame according to your strategy. 

 is a great (and free!) charting tool where you can keep track of all the coins traded across many crypto exchanges.

If you are looking for quick trades, catching short-term opportunities, you should select a lower time frame, such as the 5-minutes or the 15-minutes.

On the other hand, if you are building a long-term strategy chasing less frequent and more significant price swings, you may opt for the 1-hour or 4-hour time frames. 

The daily (1-day) time frame fits the strategies you will expect to run for months or years. 

Coinrule also enables the possibility of adding multiple time frames within the same rule. Just like advanced traders look at the price of the same coin from different time frames to have a more extensive idea of the trend, you can incorporate this approach into your rules.

Hands down, the Japanese candlesticks are the best way to read a crypto chart. They provide all relevant information about how the price moved in a specific time frame with a straightforward and direct visual representation.

The graph above is an hourly candlestick chart for the pair ETH/USDT on Binance Exchange. The first thing you will notice is the red and green candlesticks printing one after another. Each candle portrays the main direction of the price movement of the currency during that specific time interval. 

Including the closing price, each candle shows the opening price, the lowest and highest price of the given period. As depicted in the image below. 

The benefit of candlesticks is that they clearly show what happened in this exact timeframe, which can help traders identify patterns. 

Understanding Coinrule executions when reading charts

Coinrule uses candlesticks as references when calculating price moves. Thus on the candlestick, you would be looking at the closed price and measuring the change from there. 

To check when a rule such as the one above should execute, first load the 1-hour chart of the trading pair you want to study. Trading Ethereum and selecting the USDT wallet results in the bot checking the ETHUSDT trading pair.

Then check to see if there are any significant decreases. This is typically signified with a large red candle, as shown below.

As you can see reading the crypto chart of ETHUSDT, small dips result usually in small swings, larger ones indicate larger volatility so you can set a larger take profit.

You can either try catching more frequent small profits, or you can trade less often but chasing larger profits. That ultimately depends on your trading style and preferences. 

The previous candle’s close price is used to measure the price decrease. For a rule to execute, the price decrease has to occur within one candle. If the price falls more than the specified value, the rule would have executed once the price difference equals the set target.   

If the price decrease does not happen in the current candle, the price reference is updated with a new reference. You can read more in

How To Read A Crypto Chart

 Understanding How To Use 'From Current Live Price'

 we use the market price at the moment of launching the rule. Coinrule uses that price to calculate the target at which the buy order will execute.

In this example, the rule is set to buy BTCUSDT with a price decrease by 1%, and the market price is currently 36546 USDT.  

The price drop to 36178 USDT and the Buy order executes. 

Every time the rule starts back from the first condition, the price reference is updated according to market conditions.

In the above example, after executing the buy order, the 

if you use the THEN operator between actions, 

the first condition becomes active again after the second condition executes, and at that moment, the new current live price is updated.

 How To Compare Moving Averages With Price

When using "MA greater than / lower than price" the bot compares the value of the most-recently available moving average with the last traded price.

If your rule features an “MA greater than or lower than price” condition and specifies 1-hour timeframe, the rule will use the previous 1 hour MA close as a reference price for the following 1 hour.  

, within this timeframe, the price is greater than or lower than the MA close, the rule will execute.  

The rule has one hour to use this close price and if the condition is not met until the hourly candles closes, the MA close price for this period will then be the new reference.  

This logic provides traders more flexibility when creating rules and setting conditions. It provides the ability to use real-time data, opposed to using candle close against candle close as seen in the crossing below or above logic.

"BUY… IF MA (50) lower than price in a timeframe of one hour."

MA 50 closes at 100 USD at 12:59. 100 USD is the close price and the reference price. 

From 13:00 - 13:59, the price has to increase to over 100 USD in order for the Rule to Execute. 

13:43, the price hits 102 USD. The Rule Executes and a BUY order is complete.

MA 50 closes at 100 USD at 12:59. 100 USD is the close price and the reference price.

Price continues dropping and does not manage to exceed 100 USD. The MA 50 now follows price downwards and closes at 98 USD 13:59. This is the new reference point. 

The new candle opens (14:00) and from 14:00 - 14:59, the price has to increase to over 98 USD in order for the Rule to Execute.

Introducing The 'Moving Average Crossing' Strategy

Traders use moving averages to spot initial signs of trend, both on the upside and on the downside. 

One of the most common trading strategies is to catch the crossing of a 

 moving average (calculated based on fewer periods) with a 

 one (using a larger number of periods). 

A crossing usually signals a potential trend reversal, which can provide excellent opportunities for traders.

When setting up a condition to trigger when a moving average 

, the system will wait for the confirmation of the values based on the most recent closed candle. 

Once a crossing event occurs, it is considered valid until the new candle closes.

Waiting for the confirmation of the signal, instead of triggering the trade immediately, prevents from getting buy and sell orders multiple times within a short period of time. This part of the "patient approach" you should always incorporate into your trading systems.

What are Trailing Stops & Trailing Buys? 

 A Trailing Order automatically adjusts to market movements. It follows your position when the market is moving in your favor and will take profits if the market moves against you and trigger your Trailing Order. 

To give an example, let's assume you buy BTC at $45,450. You set your trailing stop at $250 below the current market level, so at $45,200.

The price moves in your favor by $1000 to $46,450. This move will have increased  your Trailing Stop limit to $46,200 – maintaining a distance of $250 from your new position. Your stop distance will continue to move up every time BTC moves up.

However, your Trailing Stop limit will never go down. This ensures that your profit is always protected. To come back to the previous example, if BTC were to start dropping, the rule would sell at $46,200, making sure you secure a profit above the price of $45,450 at which you had bought in.

If you had set up a normal stop, say at $45,400, your position would have continued to drop, ultimately leading to a loss. 

Please bear in mind that trailing stops are not guaranteed to execute and can be subject to slippage. This means that they may not be executed exactly at the level you’ve specified.

Another form of a Trailing Order is a Trailing Buy. This is used to set a Buy Order for a coin that is dropping in price. Say BTC is currently at $42,000 but on a downward trajectory. A Trailing Buy set at $100 would mean that if the price reaches $42,100 your rule would buy. However, if BTC's price continues to go down, the Trailing Buy would remain $100 above the current price. If BTC were to drop to $39,000 and then go up to $39,100, the rule would trigger. You would be able to buy in at a better price.

You can set up Trailing Orders inside any condition on the Rule Page. 

Here, the rule will buy $1,000 of BTC once BTC gets to $43,000. This will then trigger the 

 of $250 below the buy price of $43,000. If BTC immediately drops to $42,750, the rule will sell. However, if BTC continues to go up, the Trailing Stop will follow. Let's assume the price of BTC reaches $45,000, the sell price would be $44,750.  

In this scenario, the Trailing Stop protects your profits.

Here, the rule will sell $1,000 of BTC once BTC gets to $43,000. This will then trigger the 

 of $250 above the BTC price of $43,000. This makes sure you buy back into the rally should the price continue to go up. But let's assume you expect BTC to go down once it reaches $43,000

With the Trailing Buy, the rule will continue to adjust the Buy price to $250 above the current price. If BTC drops to say $42,000, the new buy price will be $42,250. Should the down trend now reverse and BTC go up by $250 to $42,250, the rule will buy back 100% of the amount you sold.  

In this scenario, the Trailing Buy ensures that you buy back at a better price than with a simple Buy set a fixed price.

Certain rule structures with Trailing functionality are possible but should not be used unless you have a very specific strategy in mind.

In this case the rule would buy BTC but as exit condition it would sell with a Trailing $250 above the current price.  

This means that if you buy BTC at $43,000 and the price drops to $40,000, you would 

not have a Stop Loss / Exit condition defined

 on the way down. The rule would only sell once the price bounces back by $250, i.e. in this case if after dropping to $40,000 the price goes up to $40,250, the rule would sell.

In this case the rule would sell BTC and try to buy back with a Trailing $250 

This means that if you sell BTC at $43,000 but the price continues to increase say to $45,000, you are missing on the upside. At the same time, the rule would then 

once BTC would drop by $250. In our example, if BTC dropped from $45,000 to $44,750, the rule would buy the drop. The risk however would be that BTC could continue dropping. 

if you connect them to other indicators and triggers but if in doubt, avoid building complex strategies that may not trigger as you expect.

1) Price decreases until it has decreased by 10% from $1,197 (trailing order price) --> the rule triggers 

2) Price increases from $1,197, then at some point decreases by 10%

Example: assuming the price increases to $1,400 - this now becomes the new trailing order price. The rule triggers if the price decreases by 10% from $1,400.

Assuming the price now drops 10% from $1,400, reaching $1,260, the rule will sell.

The difference between using the 'Current Live Price' option in the dropdown [referred to here as 'price at rule launch'] and the 'trailing' price is that the rule would have continued to evaluate the price increase against the 'price at rule launch' of $1,197 if 'trailing' was not used. The rule would have triggered at a lower price of $1,077. The trader would have done worse compared to selling at $1,260. 

Coinrule's engine will always take the highest reached trailing order price from which to calculate the trailing decrease.

1) Price increases until it has increased by 10% from $1,203 (trailing order price) --> the rule triggers

Let's assume the price of 1 ETH now decreases to $1,150. The Trailing Order Price gets updated to $1,150. The system now evaluates the condition

against the new Trailing Order Price of $1,150. 

For the rule to trigger, the price would now need to increase by 10% from 

 and reach a price of $1,265 before the order triggers. 

Without using the trailing functionality here, the rule would have triggered at a higher price of $1,323.

In connection with a 'trailing price increase' and a 'Buy' you can catch trend reversals with a better entry price compared to the regular 'current live price' value.

Using 'trailing' more than once inside a condition block will create a logical bug in the rule execution.

This is a known-issue and will be resolved by the team soon.

Do not use 'trailing' more than once per condition block.

There are two main types of trailing in trading:

: A trailing stop is a stop-loss order that adjusts itself as the market price moves in your favor. If the market price moves in the direction you desire, the stop price moves accordingly, helping to lock in profits. However, if the market reverses and hits the trailing stop level, the position is closed, protecting you from further losses. 

Similar to the trailing stop, the trailing take profit automatically adjusts your take-profit level as the market price moves in your favor. It helps ensure you capture maximum profit if the market continues to rise, while still securing your gains if the price begins to fall.

Let's break down how trailing works with a simple example:

- Imagine you bought Bitcoin (BTC) at $30,000, and you set a trailing stop at 5%.

- If BTC's price rises to $31,500 (which is a 5% increase), your trailing stop moves up to $29,925 (5% below the new peak of $31,500).

- If the price continues to rise to $33,000, the trailing stop moves up again to $31,350 (5% below $33,000).

- Now, if the price suddenly drops to $31,350, your trailing stop is triggered, and your position is sold at that price, locking in your profits.

The key advantage of trailing is that it follows the market's upward movement but does not move downwards, meaning it only locks in gains, not losses.

Coinrule offers an intuitive way to incorporate trailing into your automated trading strategies. Here's how you can set up trailing in your rules:

 Start by setting the market condition that will trigger your trailing stop. For example, you might choose to activate trailing when the price of BTC increases by a certain percentage.
 

Define the percentage distance you want your trailing stop to follow the market. This could be a conservative figure like 3%, or a more aggressive one like 10%, depending on your risk appetite.
 

Once the trailing stop is triggered, Coinrule will automatically execute the sell order at the predefined trailing stop level, securing your gains.

 Choose the condition under which the trailing take profit will be activated. For example, you might set it to trigger when the price increases by 10%.
 

 Define the percentage or price level at which the take profit will trail the market. This allows the take profit to move up as the market price increases.
 

 When the trailing take profit level is reached, Coinrule will automatically sell your asset, ensuring you capture the maximum profit.

Trailing works best in trending markets. In highly volatile markets, tight trailing stops may trigger prematurely, so it’s essential to adjust the trailing percentage based on the asset's volatility.
