FAQ: What happens if I pause a rule?

When a rule is paused, no trades will be triggered based on that particular rule until it is reactivated. To put it simply, pausing a rule puts a temporary halt on its trading actions. Trades will only resume once the rule is unpaused or relaunched.

Pausing can be useful when you want to review a strategy, respond to unusual market conditions or temporarily prevent further executions without immediately removing the rule.

What happens immediately after I pause a rule?

As soon as a rule is paused,  Coinrule  stops triggering trades from that rule. Its conditions and actions will not produce new automated orders until the rule is reactivated.

For example, imagine that your rule says:

If Bitcoin decreases by 3%, buy $100 of Bitcoin.

If the rule is paused, it will not place that buy order—even if Bitcoin reaches the specified condition during the pause.

The same principle applies to selling actions. A paused rule cannot trigger an automated buy or sell based on its configured conditions.

Does pausing delete the rule?

No. Pausing is intended to be a temporary halt, not the deletion of the strategy. The rule remains available so that it can be reviewed and reactivated later.

If you only want to stop trading for a short period, pausing is generally more appropriate than deleting the rule.

What happens to open trades?

Pausing a rule prevents its trading actions from triggering. If the rule already has an open trade, its automated exit conditions will not execute while the rule remains paused.

For example, suppose a rule has already bought Ethereum and is waiting to sell when either of these conditions is met:

  • The price increases by 5%
  • The price decreases by 3%

If you pause the rule before either exit condition triggers, the rule will not automatically place the sell order while it is paused. The underlying asset may remain in your connected exchange wallet and continue changing in value.

Before pausing a rule with open trades, check its activity and consider how those positions will be managed. You may need to monitor or close them separately, depending on your trading plan.

Will pausing a rule close my positions?

Pausing should not be treated as an instruction to close open positions. Its purpose is to stop the rule from triggering additional trading actions.

If you want to stop a strategy and also close its positions, review the open trades individually and make sure the intended closing actions are completed. Do not assume that pressing Pause automatically sells the assets associated with the rule.

Will my funds be removed from the exchange?

No. Pausing a rule does not withdraw or transfer funds from your exchange account.  Coinrule  connects to the exchange to execute the instructions defined in your rules, while the assets remain in the exchange wallet.

However, funds held in an open position will remain exposed to market movements until the position is closed.

Will trades missed during the pause execute later?

No trades are triggered while the rule is paused. You should not assume that every signal occurring during the pause will be stored and executed later.

When you reactivate the rule, review its conditions, reference prices and current market environment. A strategy that was appropriate when it was paused may behave differently when restarted.

How do I resume a paused rule?

A paused rule can resume trading once it is unpaused or relaunched. After reactivation, Coinrule can once again trigger trades when the rule’s conditions are satisfied.

Before resuming, check:

  • The selected exchange and trading pair
  • Available wallet balances
  • Open positions
  • Entry and exit conditions
  • Order amounts
  • Maximum executions
  • Execution frequency
  • Stop-loss and take-profit settings
  • Current market conditions

This review is especially important if the rule has been paused for an extended period.

When should I consider pausing a rule?

You may want to pause a rule when:

  • Market conditions have changed significantly
  • The strategy is behaving differently from your expectations
  • You want to review recent performance
  • You need to investigate rejected orders or other errors
  • Your exchange API connection requires attention
  • Your available balance has changed
  • You no longer want the rule to open additional trades
  • You need time to decide how to manage an existing position

Pausing gives you time to review the situation without permanently removing the rule.

What should I check before pausing?

Before pausing, open the rule’s activity page and check whether it has any active positions. Pay particular attention to positions that depend on the same rule for an automated stop-loss or take-profit action.

Ask the following questions:

  • Has the rule already bought or sold an asset?
  • Is it currently waiting for an exit condition?
  • Will pausing leave a position without automated protection?
  • Do I need to close or monitor that position manually?
  • Are other rules trading the same assets?

Checking these details can help prevent an unexpected position from being left unmanaged.

Is pausing the same as editing a rule?

No. Pausing temporarily stops trading activity, while editing changes supported parameters within the strategy.

If your goal is to change an order amount, indicator value, execution limit or another supported setting, editing may be more appropriate. Coinrule provides additional information in its  guide to editing rules .

If you only want to prevent trades while you investigate or reconsider the strategy, use Pause.

Is pausing the same as pausing my Coinrule plan?

No. Pausing an individual rule and pausing a Coinrule subscription plan are separate actions.

Pausing a rule only affects the trading activity associated with that specific strategy. It does not automatically pause other rules or change the status of your subscription.

Can Coinrule pause a rule automatically?

A rule may encounter repeated errors that prevent successful execution. Coinrule’s persistence logic can retry failed actions and introduce temporary pauses between attempts. If repeated retries continue to fail, the rule may eventually remain paused without further retry attempts.

If a rule pauses unexpectedly, review its activity for exchange errors, insufficient balance, unsupported trading pairs or API connection problems. See Coinrule’s  Rule Persistence Logic guide  for more information.

Key Takeaway

Pausing a rule temporarily stops all trades associated with that rule. Trading will only resume after the rule has been unpaused or relaunched.

Remember that pausing can also stop automated exit actions. Always review open trades and current exposure before pausing, and check the complete rule again before reactivating it.
